RootsTech Connect 2021 Video Tour

Here's a 5-minute video tour of the RootsTech Connect 2021 Genealogy Convention. At the end of the convention hall tour is a 5-minute video explanation of Relatives at Rootstech, a new and improved feature that you can take advantage of from the comfort of your own home or office. There's also a free Surname Search tool if you haven't added yourself to the FamilySearch family tree (so they can't compute your Relatives at RootsTech). Be sure to visit www.rootstech.org, join Relatives at RootsTech, and see if we're related. I'm Alyson Tayler (maiden name) in the FamilySearch tree so that's how to search for me. And visit the Expo Hall vendors for free Conference swag and promotions. Some promotions and swag include: subscription discounts, free downloadable books, free downloadable genealogy magazines, resources from genealogy societies, and at the OnGenealogy booth I have a couple of free, fillable-pdf family tree art 8x10s you can download, fill out on y…

Update: What Works at RootsWeb

RootsWeb, the free genealogy site purchased and currently operated by Ancestry.com, crashed in 2017 and Ancestry has been trying to get the site up and running ever since.   The good news is there are portions of RootsWeb that are back online.      The bad news is many individuals and communities used RootsWeb to host their sites and I'm not aware of any "freepages" that are back online. If you know of any freepages sites that have come online, please add a link in the comments.    So What Works at RootsWeb?   Available as Read-Only at RootsWeb   Family Trees - Family Trees, aka WorldConnect, is a great site that allows people to upload GEDCOM files (family tree databases) and publish them for others to see. This is currently working. There are more than 800 million names in free family trees users have submitted to RootsWeb. I haven't been able to download any GEDCOM files for family trees that interest me, but I hav…

Family History Month Day 29 – StackExchange for Genealogy

On Day 29 of Family History Month, use the Genealogy and Family History StackExchange for your genealogy questions.     StackExchange is a Q&A network for computer programmers that has expanded into Q&A for other topics, including genealogy and family history.   Anyone can read questions and answers on StackExchange, but in order to post questions or answers you'll need to be a registered user. You don't have to be that heavily invested to benefit from StackExchange. I often go to StackExchange when I'm digitizing photos to remember the recommended file type and size. It's a great site for a quick refresher on various genealogy topics and is worth checking out. If you become a registered user and want to post questions and answers you should understand more about the community. Registered users gain or lose Reputation or trust within the community based on how other StackExchange users rate their questions and answers. A higher repu…
