How To Export a FamilySearch GEDCOM with RootsMagic – updated 12/1/23

RootsMagic is one of the FamilySearch partners that allows you to download your FamilySearch tree and create a GEDCOM file. RootsMagic has free and subscription options and both allow you to download your tree from FamilySearch.


Here's FamilySearch's statement:

"Currently we are not able to export data from Family Tree to a GEDCOM file. Use one of the Family Tree certified programs, i.e. Ancestral Quest, Legacy Family Tree, or RootsMagic to import data from Family Tree into one of the programs and then create a GEDCOM."

How to Create a 3-2-1 Backup Plan

A 3-2-1 Backup plan means a backup plan for when you lose your computer files due to hard drive failure, theft, fire, etc. This has become the industry standard for a minimum level of preparedness and protection for our digital files. The plan, in a nutshell, is to have:


3-2-1 3 copies of your data, on at least2 different local storage devices, with at least1 copy being offsite

Some Fall Projects

I'm going to be radio-silent for the next few weeks because I have several pressing Fall projects outside of work and family obligations. These are probably in reverse order of importance, but here goes.  

First, the grapes are overdue to be picked and juiced. I've processed 50 quarts and have at least that many more to pick and juice. The rest of the garden, mercifully, has been harvested.

Second, my brain finally reached input-overload and I can no longer juggle and remember all my accounts and passwords, my family members' accounts and passwords, and generally feel like I'm on top of things. I'm geeking-out and making a Home Operations Manual with Phone numbers, Bills & Accounts, the Family Budget, a Home Inventory, a Food Inventory, a Family History Inventory, and a section for Operations Manuals for every task necessary to run this home.
