Facebook has become a great free resource for genealogy and family history. There are thousands of Facebook groups and pages for genealogy locations, ethnic groups, and interests and these groups often have amazing shared files on Facebook. Specialty Facebook groups are often the first place you’ll hear about new resources for a surname or locale you’re researching.
Several genealogists have compiled useful Facebook group lists you can use to connect with others who are researching similar people and places.
FamilySearch has a wiki page where you can find and contribute to Facebook group and page listings worldwide.
Most of these Facebook groups are “closed” and you’ll need to request to join-don’t let that stop you. After you’ve joined, be sure to check their “Files” section and browse through past posts to see if you can quickly glean something from others’ work. Happy Hunting! #FamilyHistoryMonth
