  1. My great grandfather, Francisco de Castro was born in Madeira in 1855 and left the country by boat for Demerara, British Guina maybe in the late 1860s where he met and married Rosa de Franca who was born in British Guina of Portuguese parents from Madeira. I am trying to find out where Francisco de Castro was born in Madeira to trace any family if possible.

    1. Hi Pamela – I also have the same problem. My ancestor EMMANUEL DE CASTRO says he was born in Funchal in 1832. He left Madeira in 1851 to go to New Zealand. So far I have not been able to find his birth mainly for want of a researcher on Madeira and also the name of a village or parish where he may have lived. I have trouble believing that he departed Madeira without having left behind parents and perhaps siblings. Having said that perhaps he was born in Portugal – I don’t know. Could we share any tips on research in Madeira. I live in the Cook Islands. Kind regards, Gail Eraio

    2. I just saw a couple of records last night with this name. Francisco baptised 1846 01 18, his brother Antonio baptized 1840 11 08 also went to Guyana. See October 1874 trip. Father was Eustacio or Eustaquio, they were from Canico. Hope this helps.

    3. Hi Pamela:
I just came across this post last night, prior to which I was looking at DeCastro records. This is what I read (from the Oct 1874 trip to BG). Antonio was baptized 08-11-1840, his first trip to BG was at 17 yrs. His bro Francisco was baptized 01-18-1846. Francisco travelled with his wife and two daughters. The father of the brothers was Eustaquio or Eustacio, they were from Canico, Madeira.
      Good luck.
      Debbie

    4. I tried to post a response twice today but was unsuccessful. Francisco and his brother, Antonio, travelled together in Oct 1874 to BG. They were from Canico. One of them was married to Claudina and had two daughters. Take care and good luck. Debbie
