The British Columbia Archives has a free, online, searchable database for birth records, baptisms, death records, and marriage records including colonial marriages. It’s possible to do basic searches or more advanced searches, including keyword/boolean searches at this site. Some records include links to images of the original documents. For births and baptisms the records include the father’s name, mother’s name, child’s name, child’s gender, and the event place; for marriage records the results generally include the groom’s name, bride’s name, date of event, place of event, registration number, BC Archives microfilm number, GSU microfilm number, and a link to the free image (if available); and for death records results include the name of the deceased, age, date of birth, place of death, death registration number, and sometimes a link to the death certificate. Online British Columbia vital records collections include:

  • Birth records, 1854-1903
  • Baptisms, 1836-1888
  • Marriage records, 1872-1938
  • Colonial Marriage records, 1859-1872
