FamilySearch Books hosts family history books from many partnering institutions. The collection includes more than 325,000 digitized genealogy and family history publications with family histories, county and local histories, genealogy magazines and how-to books, gazetteers, and medieval histories and pedigrees.

This is a great collection and I’d just add three notes:

  • First, use the search window provided at the link. If you select a partner institution listed on this site you’ll be taken away from the free book search window and might just be searching a partner repository’s on-site holdings.
  • Second, not all books returned in the search window can be viewed from your home computer. If you see this icon:
  •  FamilySearch books insufficient rights (a book with a not permitted logo) next to a book title, it means you must go to a local Family History Center or the FHL in SLC to view it. Visit this link to find your nearest Family History Center. (I’ve run to a nearby Family History Center to view books and it’s a simple process if you have one near you.)
  • Third, when you select a book to view, you’ll have to wait for the whole book to be downloaded to their site which may take some time.
  • For updates and news on the latest genealogy collections, follow FamilySearch on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google+Pinterest, and Instagram.
