Historical Society of Cheshire County collects, preserves, and shares the history of Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
Books, Access over 5,000 of the Society’s library research books via Keene-Link, which also contains the book catalog for Keene Public Library and Keene State College. Most of the books relate to family histories, town and county histories, and vital statistics
Artifacts & Photographs, The Historical Society participates in a state-wide initiative to share NH’s history and heritage by providing access to its object collections online. Visit NH History Network to access the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s historic photograph collection.
Business Records, include account books, business histories, business records, and articles for a variety of small trades and larger manufacturers in Cheshire County.
Church records and local nonprofit records are also available for many local churches and organizations.
Census Records, Federal population Census from 1790 to 1930, every 10 years, except for the year 1890 which was lost in a fire.
Federal Agricultural and Manufacturing Census from 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880.
Personal Papers, Over 138 collections of personal and family papers are archived at the Society including diaries and letters, family genealogy materials, and newspaper clippings.
Photograph Collection, Approximately 20,000 historic photographs from the 1840’s to the 2010’s are preserved in the Society’s archives. As of March 2017, about 8,000 of those historic photographs have been digitized and are searchable to onsite visitors in our library database. Published Materials, Cheshire County’s town histories, town reports, town and business directories, and local newspapers are available to researchers.
Maps, More than 300 different maps of New Hampshire, Cheshire County, County’s towns, and related areas are in the collection.
Vital Statistics, The research room provides researchers with access to birth, death, marriage, and cemetery records for various towns in New England.
To further assist Historical Society members and patrons with their research needs, the Society conducts research in response to mail, phone, and email requests for a fee.
A standard research fee of $30.00 is charged for this service. There may be additional charges if a large number of photocopies are required or more than one hour of research time is necessary to answer a query.
