Irish Army Barracks website is a pilot for the project: ‘Mapping State and Society in Eighteenth-Century Ireland’. …The first phase of this project involves mapping all of the army barracks active between 1690 and 1815, and preparing supporting webpages that will contain further information, data, images and resources for each barracks. A preliminary map and pages with detailed information for barracks in County Armagh are now available. The other elements of the project currently in gestation are: Boroughs; Revenue districts; and Law & Order.”
The preliminary site has an interactive map with all army barracks active in Ireland between 1690 and 1815 and includes a detailed view of the barracks in County Armagh.
“The project has two key strands. The first involves the compiling of an online database and mapping of all barracks built in Ireland from 1690 through to 1815. The second involves carrying out research on a wide range of primary and secondary sources that will provide answers to the central research questions relating to the impact of the barracks and their occupants upon Ireland as well as their wider significance.”
