Maine, State Archive Collections, 1718-1957 is a free collection at FamilySearch with an index and images of military records for Civil War Soldiers and Sailors and World War I Soldier records by their town of residence. Only military records have currently been indexed but there are also images of land, naturalization, court, and other records that may be indexed at a future date. At present, all the images are browsable.

Maine Civil War Cards may include:

  • Name, age, rank and company of soldier
  • Whether service was in the infantry, cavalry, or heavy artillery
  • Birth place and current residence
  • Marital status
  • Physical description
  • Date of enlistment
  • Date and reason for leaving service
  • Record of previous service

 

Maine Draft Cards may include:

  • Name, age and current residence
  • Date and place of birth
  • Race, occupation and marital status

 

Maine World War I Military Records may include:

  • Name and residence
  • Date and place of birth
  • Rank and military unit
  • Marital status
  • Date and place where soldier entered military service
  • Date and place where soldier left military service
  • Person to be notified in case of an emergency

 

Maine Enlistment Lists of Volunteers may include:

  • Name and age
  • Date of enlistment
  • Residence and occupation
  • Marital status
  • Additional remarks, comments
