New York Vital Records

The New York State Department of Health is the official address and site for how to find New York Vital Records. New York State outside of New York City started vital records registration in 1881. The New York State Department of Health provides uncertified copies birth records, death records, and marriage records for genealogical purposes including, see below for details.

 New York Birth Certificates, excluding New York City

  • New York birth certificates can be requested online at VitalChek
  • for years since 1880 New York birth certificates can be requested from the New York State Department of Health by priority handling (see address at top of page) or regular handling (see address at top of page)
  • for years before 1880 write to the Registrar of Vital Statistics in the city where the event occurred
  • New York birth certificates for Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers prior to 1914 need to be requested from the Local Registrar and those addresses can be found at the NY State Department of Health site

New York City Birth Certificates and Birth Records

  • for the years 1878-1909 you can do free genealogical records searches you can do an online search at the Italian Genealogical Group’s site, and you can limit your search to a certain borough (2.2 million records)
  • for indexes and vital records in New York City and in the former city of Brooklyn you can apply to VitalSearch for a fee
  • for information on what the indexes include, visit the NYC Archives and scroll down to “Scope of Indexes”
  • for birth records after 1909, contact the New York City Department of Health
  • for birth records prior to 1909 you can also request a search and certified copy online at NYC Department of Records

New York Death Certificates, excluding New York City

  • New York death certificates can be requested online at VitalChek
  • for years after 1880 New York death certificates can be requested from the New York State Department of Health by priority handling (see address at top of page) or regular handling (see address at top of page)

  • for NYC marriage records after 1929 contact the City Clerk
  • for online search and certified copy requests before 1930 visit the NYC Department of Records
  • for free genealogical records searches you can do an online search at the Italian Genealogical Group’s site, and you can limit your search to a certain borough (2.2 million records from 1878-1909)
  • post-1937 marriage records in the boroughs of New York City are held by the borough offices, for those addresses contact New York City Clerk’s Office, New York City Marriage Bureau, Municipal Building, Room 252, 1 Centre Street, New York, NY 10007, 212-639-9775
