Slavery Era Insurance Policies Registry at Illinois Department of Insurance. This is a 31 page pdf listing the names of slaves and slaveholders named in Aetna Life insurance policies taken out by slaveholders.

Here’s the legal basis for the public release of these claims: “Pursuant to Public Act 93-0333, effective January 1, 2004, every licensed insurer was required to report to the Director information regarding policies issued to slaveholders for death or damage of their slaves that it wrote either directly or through a predecessor corporation during the slavery era. The information was compiled into a report that is available to the public and the General Assembly.”
