South Dakota State Library has free, online collections that may be useful for genealogy and family history including:

  • Argus Leader, The (Sioux Falls) Index (1982-1995) “Indexes and provides citations (only) to selected articles published in the Sioux Falls “Argus Leader” newspaper from January, 1982 to December 1995. Does not include national news or columns (unless relevant to SD), obituaries, birth/engagement/wedding announcements, daily sports, public notices, minutes of government meetings, or police records.”

  • Deadwood Historical Newspapers Index (1876-1905) “Indexes issues from 1876 to 1905 of these historic Deadwood papers: “Black Hills Pioneer,” “Black Hills Times,” and “Black Hills Champion”. Created by the staff of the Deadwood Public Library”
  • Indian Country Today Index (1996-June, 2003) “Indexes and provides citations (only) to articles published in the “Indian Country Today” newspaper from January, 1996 thru June?, 2003.”
  • Online State Publications “The South Dakota State Library’s Online State Publications (CONTENTdm Digital Collections) provides access to South Dakota State Agency publications and more various collections.”
  • South Dakota Newspaper Association/SDNA Public & Legal Notices “Locate public and legal notices published in South Dakota Newspapers. Notices are archived for three months. This resource is provided as a public service by the South Dakota Newspaper Association members.”

South Dakota State Library Digital Collections

  • SD State Agencies “This collection houses documents and other publications created and released for general distribution by South Dakota State Agencies.”
  • SD State Agency Historical PublicationsThe SD State Agency Historical Publications Collection is a special collection of historical state agency publications. The SD State Library has state publications that date back to territorial days. In order to preserve these materials and make them easier for the general public to access and study, digitized copies are made available in this collection.
  • South Dakota Libraries “South Dakota’s library community predates statehood.  Each library in South Dakota has its own history and its own place in the community. This photographic collection illustrates each library’s unique history and showcases different attributes.  South Dakota has a number of Carnegie Libraries that are still operating.”
  • South Dakota State Library Vertical Files “The South Dakota State Library maintains a vertical file of newspaper articles. These articles reflect items determined to be of local interest and may not be available elsewhere. Full text is not available for each article. However, each article is available by request and/or in-house use.”
  • Our Capitol Centennial-June 19, 2010 “June 19, 2010 was the South Dakota Capitol Centennial celebration! To mark the occasion, there was a community barbeque, speakers, dancers, band performances, and more. Attendees donated their photographs of the day for this collection.”
