Stavanger City Archives (Stavanger Byarkiv) in Stavanger, Norway has free, online Norwegian genealogy records including:

People, Property, and Government Records

  • Stavanger City Census records (1894 -1916)

  • Stavanger Address Books, 1894-1916, (Stavanger City Directories, 1894-1916)

  • Håland Parish / Hetland / Haaland Address Books (Håland Parish / Hetland / Haaland City Directories) 1925-1958, not inclusive “Håland parish was a former municipality in Rogaland. It was created in 1837 with master ship pilot Gabriel Monsen as the first mayor. The municipality was in 1930 divided into two municipalities, Sola and Madla municipality.”

  • Rådstueprotokoller (Magistrate Protocols) 1769-1923 these are government records with names of elected officials and public servants, names of tradesmen and what they were permitted to sell, citizenship and diplomas (rådstuattester) which often include “the right of inheritance and kinship,” and some of these records will tell where these people were born or where they last lived.

  • Matrikler (Landed Property Tax Lists), Stavanger City Archive (Stavanger Byarkiv) has these books for each decade (1901-1960s) with “information about the value appraised and who was the owner of each house. We have digitized all of these and you can now download them as PDF files.”

  • 1967 Supplement to Cadastral (property ownership map/survey for taxation) this is a large pdf file and takes a  long time to download

  • Fire Assessment Maps, before Address books/City Directories, books were published with fire assessment numbers for different properties and these maps from the 1880s have the fire assessment numbers on them

  • Tax Assessment Briefs, digitized records showing owner of home, home’s value, year of build, and more (several years digitized and in alphabetical order)
