Sanborn Maps – This collection contains 537 Sanborn fire insurance maps of locations throughout Nevada.

Lake Tahoe – Drawn from a variety of sources, this collection encompasses a variety of visual materials related to Lake Tahoe.

General Land Office Maps – A collection of plat maps from the General Land Office of Reno.

Biographies & Books

Persons in the Foreground: Nevada – This collection consists of a two-volume set containing biographies of 110 prominent Nevadans (109 men and one woman). Each biography is accompanied by a full-page portrait illustration in black and white.

A Thousand Miles of Desert and Mountains – These three volumes (of the original 4 volumes) depict the Scott’s prospecting journey through southern Nevada, Death Valley, eastern California/western Nevada along the Walker River, and through Bridgeport over Sonora Pass.

Wheeler Survey – The forty-two notebooks in this collection date from 1869 to 1878. All but four were produced during the “Wheeler Survey” in Nevada from 1871 to 1878.

 

 

Business, Employers, Occupations, & Industry

Consolidated Copper – This collection includes cyanotype photographs depicting mining operations, equipment, and progress from within the mining pits of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company.

Lincoln Highway -The images in this collection document places and activities along the Lincoln and Victory highways as they cross Nevada, eastern California and western Utah, as well as Reno’s Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927 celebrating the completion of the two roads.

Thin Sections Mineral Samples – Mineral thin sections from the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library (GBSSRL), Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.

Yucca Mountain – The collection includes U.S. Government issued reports and contractor work related to the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

 

 

Ethnic

Margaret M. Wheat Collection – This collection includes 50 selected Paiute and Shoshone oral histories recorded by Margaret M. Wheat between the 1940s and the 1960s.

Western Shoshone Defense Project – Much of the material is derived from the Western Shoshone Defense Project’s (WSDP) nineteen years as a non-profit, grassroots Western Shoshone organization advocating land and treaty rights. The material also represents Carrie Dann’s involvement in Indian politics with associated traditional Western Shoshone councils and organizations.

Digital Basque Collections – “The Basque Studies Library’s Digital Collection is composed of images from a multitude of photographers showcasing the Basque Experience both in the American West and Europe.

Basque Images Collection – This collection consists of images from the Jon Bilbao Basque Library’s photography collections.

Jon Bilbao Papers – The collection includes various types of materials: letters with other Basque personalities in the exile, on political and cultural issues, from 1939 to 1958.

La Baskonia Collection -La Baskonia, published from 1893 until 1943, represents the vitality and creativity of the Basque community in Argentina during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing its insights into the lives and aspirations of Argentina’s Basque Community.

Prudencio Ituarte Memoir -The memoir recalls Prudencio’s whole life, from his early years in Lekeitio, Bizkaia, Basque Country, to his migration to Mexico, his life as a Basque migrant, all the way to his last will.

 

 

Government, Legal, & Politics

First Friend of Ronald Reagan – In 2014, the Special Collections Department at the University of Nevada, Reno received a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Nevada State Library and Archives, to prepare materials related to Ronald Reagan for public use.

Senator Harry Reid Collection – Consisting of photographs and campaign materials from Senator Harry Reid’s time in congress, this collection highlights the impact Reid had on Nevada.

Senator Dean Heller Collection – The collection contains press releases from Senator Heller’s legislative career. Key topics among the press releases include veterans’ affairs, tax reform, public lands, and infrastructure projects. The collection also includes over one hundred press releases related to the Yucca Mountain project.

Yucca Mountain – The collection includes U.S. Government issued reports and contractor work related to the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

 

 

History

Anthropology Research Museum Baskets – This digital collection showcases baskets from the University of Nevada, Reno Department of Anthropology’s Huber collection. Made by Native American weavers from roughly 1840 to 1930, the baskets are presented in 2D and 3D images.

 

 

Magazines & Publications

Cooperative Extension Service Records – Annual reports by the Cooperative Extension Service on agricultural and natural resources, home economics, youth, 4-H, and other community resource programs. Records contain statistical data, narrative reports of accomplishments, and personnel data.

Medical

Medical School – This collection includes over 7,000 photographs related to the School of Medicine, along with numerous press releases and newsletters created by the school.

 

 

Miscellaneous

Maya Miller Papers – This collection represents information and materials accumulated and saved by Maya Miller throughout her years as a political activist, humanitarian, and philanthropist. Much of this material is related to Miller’s involvement with the Operation Life Board of Directors and her efforts to reform welfare laws.

Olga Reifschneider Botanical Images – This collection contains 275 images of plants and trees taken in northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region by botanist and nature writer Olga Reifschneider from the 1940s-70s, it presents an expansive view of the botanical life of this region and is exclusively devoted to native plants.

Sparks Family Papers – Though materials from John Sparks, the family’s patriarch, make up a large portion of this collection, there are also materials from other family members including documentation from the Knight Family, of which both of Sparks’ wives were members, and from the children of John and Nancy Elnora Sparks. The digital collection includes both visual and manuscript materials.

Wild Horse and Burro Collection – The Wild Horse and Burro Collection contains scanned reports, correspondence, and other publications covering the work of the Nevada Wild Horse Commission.

Chair-i-ty – Artistic renditions of library desk chairs created by University of Nevada, Reno student artists.

 

 

Oral History

Fourth St-Prater Way Oral History – The collection contains transcripts, audio files (.mp3 and .wav formats), digital photographs of interviewees related to the Fourth Street-Prater Way Oral History Project.

Margaret M. Wheat Collection – This collection includes 50 selected Paiute and Shoshone oral histories recorded by Margaret M. Wheat between the 1940s and the 1960s.

Midtown Oral History Project – The collection contains transcripts, audio files (.mp3 and .wav formats), digital photographs of interviewees, and copyright forms for the Midtown Oral History Project.

Stewart Indian School Oral History Project – Conducted from December 2016-June 2017, the oral histories in this collection document the experiences of 15 individuals who either went to school or worked at the Stewart Indian School. The interviews were conducted by Terri McBride who was on contract with the Nevada Indian Commission for the duration of the grant.

Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency Oral History Project – The collection contains the original audio interviews, in MP3 and WAVE formats, recorded by Alicia Barber during the course of the project and the transcribed, chronicler-approved oral history volume, in PDF and Microsoft Word formats, produced from the audio. Interviews are with the following chroniclers: Elisa Cafferata, Greg Evangelatos, John Hester, Leann McElroy, and Geno Martini.

Historic Aerial Photos – The 61 images in this collection were taken by Forest Service and Soil Conservation Service photographers in 1938 and 1939.

Campus Images – This collection contains images of the University of Reno campus and student activities from throughout its history.

Kline Photo Albums – The two photo albumens in this collection contain rare turn-of-the-century images of the University of Nevada, Reno and surrounding areas.

Peter Goin Collection – The Peter Goin collection consists of images from Goin’s photographic projects with a geographic focus on Nevada and/or the American West.

Sagebrush Vernacular – Sagebrush Vernacular is an exhibition of 120 photographs selected from 463 photographs of rural Nevada architecture taken by advanced photography students from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Special Collections Photographs – This collection consists of images from the photographs collections of Special Collections. Strengths of the collection include materials related to the Reno and Sparks communities, the Sierra Nevada, and locations throughout Northern Nevada.

Walter S. Long Sketchbooks and Drawings – The Walter S. Long sketches are rendered in pencil, watercolor, pen and ink. There are about one hundred titled, dated and signed sketches depicting the artist’s living quarters, also mining locations and the surrounding area in and around Eureka, Nevada and the southeastern section of the state.

Reno Street Art – A photographic archive of Reno’s thriving street art scene dating back to the mid 90s.

Harmon Collection on Lake Tahoe – Collection contains materials collected by Robert Harmon about Lake Tahoe including materials from his grandmother, Edith Jewell who owned Jewell Heights, a resort at Bijou, Lake Tahoe, California. Stationary and miniatures included were on display in the gift shop at the resort.

Lake Tahoe – Drawn from a variety of sources, this collection encompasses a variety of visual materials related to Lake Tahoe.

 

 

Yearbooks

Artemisia Yearbooks – The Artemisia yearbook was published from 1899 through 2008, providing photographic documentation of the people and events shaping the history of the University of Nevada, Reno. No Artemisias were published in 1895-98; 1906-07; 1909-12; 1915-16; 2000.
