The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is a free, online index of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, and burials from 1836, including events at sea to 1950. Records are downloadable as pdfs. If you need a certified copy there are options provided for a fee.

“What’s in the Historical index?

The Historical index has entries relating to:

  • births in Victoria from 1853 to 1916

  • marriages in Victoria from 1853 to 1942

  • deaths in Victoria from 1853 to 1988

  • church baptisms, marriages

    and burials in Victoria from 1836 to 1853

Each entry includes the:

  • name of the person or people the entry relates to

  • type of event (such as birth, marriage or death)

  • registration year

  • registration number

  • other information relevant to the type of event.”

“Established in 1853, the role of the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is to:

  • record in perpetuity all births, adoptions, marriages and deaths occurring in the state of Victoria

  • register domestic and caring relationships for people who ordinarily reside in Victoria

  • register changes of name for people who were born or reside in Victoria

  • provide certificates of the above events to individuals.

“The Registry also:

  • provides family history resources

  • maintains the Central Register and Voluntary Register, which hold information about people who are connected to donor treatment procedures

  • offers a civil marriage service through the Victorian Marriage Registry

  • collects and disseminates statistical information to authorised agencies.”
